Real Couple {Aileen & Elson}
We love sharing stories from our real couples. Aileen and Elson reveals their proposal adventure and also a inside look at the planning process.
Proposal story: Elson and I planned to have breakfast at one of our favorite places- Bibby’s Crepe Café in La Jolla. So we had breakfast and discussed a topic that periodically comes up… things we want to put on our bucket lists. We finished breakfast and realized we still had time to kill before we had to drive up to Los Angeles so Elson suggested we go to our bench in La Jolla and I loved the idea because it was a beautiful, warm September morning!
We finally sat down on our bench, relaxed and took in our surroundings as we usually do. After a short while, Elson said, “You know how we’ve been meaning to write down our bucket lists? Let’s do that right now.” He then took out a nice red, ivory and black journal with damask print from his big cargo shorts’ pocket and handed it to me. I thought, “Wow, how romantic… he’s having a romantic moment!”
He oriented me to the journal, showing me all the cute artsy-crafty things he did to it. Elson continued by explaining how he took a scrap-booking class at Michael’s (yes, he did!) and decorated the inside covers scrapbook-style with our sayings. He proudly showed me how meticulously he had placed everything, including the matching ribbon along the borders. Elson knew I’d appreciate all this because as a bag a good friend gave me reads, “I ♥ Crafts.”
Elson then handed me a pen that matched the damask journal and asked me to start the lists so I created three- one for each of us and one for us together. We started writing things on each of our lists and Elson encouraged ideas, asking, “What else?” especially for our combined list. Apparently, I took too long to write “get married” or “get engaged” so after asking, “What else?” once more, he asked for the pen and journal and wrote, “Be together forever.” I looked at him lovingly and replied, “Awww! Yes, be together forever.” At that point, Elson turned around, got on one knee, said a bunch of sweet words that to me, sounded like the Charlie Brown P.A. system, “wa… wa wa wa…” and then I heard, “I love you… will you marry me?” Of course, I said “Yes!” He then placed the ring on my finger and I said, “Really?” because I was still in shock. Turns out, all the confusion and stalling was because he was about to ask me the one question that would change the rest of our lives.
The Planning Process: “There are so many details to work through but we’re having fun planning everything together. We especially love when we discover we had the same idea for something.”
Most excited about for your Wedding Day: “Elson: seeing Aileen in her wedding dress. Aileen: celebrating our marriage with our closest family and friends.”
